Cultural Diplomacy Through Art: The U.S. Embassies’ Exhibition in Abu Dhabi
By Khaled Al Khawaldeh, Abu Dhabi

Since its inception in 1963, the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Art in Embassies (AIE) has played a pivotal role in expanding cultural diplomacy across the globe. Emerging from a vision articulated by the Museum of Modern Art a decade earlier, AIE was officially established under President John F. Kennedy as a means for artistic and cultural exchange. Today, it manages over 200 venues worldwide, curating both temporary and permanent exhibitions that showcase contemporary art from the United States as well as from host countries.

In keeping with this longstanding mission, the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi recently hosted a noteworthy exhibition featuring work from Arab American artist Helen Zughaib. The exhibition, set against the backdrop of the ambassador’s residence, aims not only to highlight artistic talent but also to foster conversations around cultural identity, migration, and the values that underpin American society.

Zughaib’s art serves as a profound commentary on the complex narratives of migration that have shaped the United States. During a recent visit to the ambassador’s residence, she emphasized the unique voices that art, music, and dance can convey—messages that often go unspoken in the political sphere. “I think we can speak in a way that politicians and government cannot speak,” she remarked, highlighting the power of art to transcend conventional dialogues.

Her work is particularly significant as it features iconic structures such as the White House and Capitol building rendered in vibrant colors and intricate patterns that draw inspiration from her Syrian heritage. This visual fusion celebrates the rich mosaic of influences that comprise not only her own identity but also the broader American narrative. Zughaib expressed her intentions succinctly: “When I first came to America and saw the monuments in Washington, D.C., I was struck by their grandeur but also their uniformity in color—all white.”

The artistic choice to use a red, white, and blue palette was a deliberate nod to the American flag’s colors, representing the foundational ideologies of freedom and opportunity. For Zughaib, these ideals played a critical role in shaping her family’s journey to America. “These colors represent big ideas of how America was born, ideas that convinced many people, including my father, to immigrate for a better life,” she explained.

The exhibition does not only spotlight Zughaib; it is presented alongside works by other artists who celebrate the natural beauty of desert landscapes—both in the UAE and the American Southwest. Artists like Diana Bonaparte and Ed Mell depict scenes reminiscent of Arizona’s unique topography and stunning sunsets, creating a dialogue between two seemingly disparate cultures united by similar environmental elements.

U.S. Ambassador Martina Strong underscored the importance of this cross-cultural artistic endeavor, stating, “This exhibition reflects the unique vision of the artists, who used oil, watercolor, and photography to capture the essence of the beauty around us. Several works highlight the contributions of Arab-American and women artists, who add their distinctive voices to this dialogue.” The ambassador’s remarks encapsulate the exhibition’s dual role: serving as a platform for artistic expression while also illuminating the shared narratives that connect disparate cultures.

In an increasingly globalized world, cultural diplomacy remains crucial for fostering understanding and collaboration among nations. The AIE’s exhibitions serve as essential conduits for such exchanges, blending artistic creativity with cultural storytelling. The current exhibition in Abu Dhabi exemplifies how art acts as both a mirror and a bridge—a reflection of one’s identity and a nexus for greater understanding.

As the U.S. and its partners navigate intriguing times marked by both challenges and opportunities, initiatives such as these remind us of the enduring power of art to enlighten, connect, and inspire dialogue. By creating spaces that celebrate diversity and heritage through art, the AIE continues its mission to reinforce international ties and promote cultural empathy across the globe.
