USC Appoints Carol Kim as Vice President of Enrollment Management
In a pivotal move to enhance its strategic direction in admissions and enrollment, the University of Southern California (USC) has appointed Carol Kim as its new Vice President for Enrollment Management, effective February 25, 2025. This announcement was made by USC Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Andrew T. Guzman, who emphasized Kim’s innovative and transformative vision for enrollment management.
“Carol is a visionary global-enrollment strategist known for building transformative programs from the ground up, creating international partnerships and expanding access through innovative recruitment and financial aid models,” Guzman conveyed in an email to the university community. He expressed confidence that her leadership will advance USC’s mission of academic excellence and broaden access to education.
Kim’s distinguished career spans over 25 years in higher education, demonstrating her commitment to enhancing enrollment strategies and fostering academic access. Before her appointment at USC, she served at New York University (NYU), where she played a critical role in shaping the university’s global enrollment strategy. As Vice President for Global Recruitment, Admissions, and Financial Aid, Kim oversaw the admissions process across NYU’s global network of campuses, including locations in New York, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai. Her leadership extended to managing a team of 172 professionals and handling an annual review of approximately 120,000 applications, alongside directing a financial aid budget exceeding 0 million.
One of Kim’s notable achievements at NYU was the implementation of the NYU Promise, an initiative designed to provide tuition-free education for families earning under 0,000. This program reflects her dedication to making higher education more accessible, a value that aligns with USC’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity in its student body.
Prior to her influential tenure at NYU, Kim held key positions at The New School, a private research university in New York City. There, she served as Senior Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and Strategic Partnerships, and also as Senior Vice President for Global Partnerships. Under her guidance, enrollment practices at The New School witnessed significant reform, enhancing both accessibility and sustainability—marking a turning point in the institution’s approach to admissions and financial aid.
Kim’s career is further adorned with several inaugural positions that underscore her leadership skills and commitment to education. She was the first Vice President of International Relations at the California Institute of the Arts, where she was instrumental in spearheading its global strategy and launching the institution’s first online course. Additionally, her tenure as Vice President of Planning and Communications for YueCheng Education in Beijing contributed to her international perspective on educational strategy.
An alumna of Harvard University’s Institute for Management and Leadership in Education, Kim holds a Doctor of Education from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from NYU. Her educational background, combined with her extensive professional experience, positions her well to address the challenges and opportunities facing USC in today’s competitive higher education landscape.
In the interim period leading up to Kim’s arrival, Timothy Brunold has been serving as the interim Vice President for Enrollment Management. He has held this position for over a year and will continue to lead the office until her official start. In addition to his role as Dean of Admission, Brunold will take on the added responsibilities of serving as Special Advisor to the Provost, ensuring a seamless transition as USC embarks on this new chapter in its enrollment strategy.
