Etihad Water and Electricity Enters Strategic Consortiums for Major Power Projects in Oman

In a significant move towards bolstering energy infrastructure in the Gulf region, Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE) has announced its entry into two prominent consortiums aimed at developing power generation projects in Oman. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance energy security and sustainability, aligning with regional commitments to reduce carbon emissions and promote clean energy technologies.
The consortium agreements were formalized by Nama Power and Water Procurement, comprising a collaboration led by Nebras Power for the Misfah project and Korea Western Power (KOWEPO) for the Duqm project. The collective investment for these ambitious undertakings is projected at approximately OMR1 billion, a figure roughly equivalent to .6 billion. Such substantial financial commitments highlight the project’s potential to significantly transform the energy landscape within Oman.
The Misfah project, in which EtihadWE partners with Bahwan Infrastructure Services, aims to establish the Misfah Power Plant with a robust capacity of around 1,700 megawatts (MW). This venture is designed to not only address the growing energy demands of Oman but also to embed advanced technology into its operations. Specifically, the project will utilize cutting-edge combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) technology, which is known for its fuel efficiency and reduced carbon footprint. By focusing on high-efficiency systems, these projects aim to make substantial contributions to Oman’s national electricity grid stability and broader economic development.
Equally significant, the Duqm project consortium comprises Nebras Power, EtihadWE, and Bahwan Infrastructure Services and is set to develop the Duqm Power Plant, which will have a capacity of approximately 877 MW. This initiative also integrates advanced CCGT technology, underscoring a proactive approach toward energy consumption that acknowledges the pressing need for environmental responsibility.
Minister of Energy and Infrastructure for the UAE, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “This collaboration demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to fostering sustainable energy cooperation across the region. Through our engagement with esteemed partners in Oman, we are working to enhance reliable energy efficiency while aligning our strategies with the long-term goal of transitioning to lower-emissions energy systems.” His comments reflect a growing recognition of the importance of bilateral relationships in achieving energy security and sustainability.
On the Omani side, Eng Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, articulated that these projects signify a critical stride toward revitalizing the national energy framework in accordance with Oman Vision 2040. This vision incorporates ambitious goals of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 while utilizing high-efficiency technologies capable of leveraging fuel blends that include hydrogen. By embracing such innovative technologies, Oman aims to set a precedent within the Gulf nations for cutting-edge energy practices.
Eng Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and Chairman of Nebras Power, underscored the socio-economic benefits projected from these initiatives. He noted that they are essential in meeting the escalating electricity demand and fostering job creation for the local workforce, thereby contributing to the larger socio-economic fabric of Oman.
Further adding to this narrative, Eng Yousif Ahmed Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Water and Electricity, remarked, “Our participation in these significant projects reinforces our commitment as a regional development partner focused on critical infrastructure. By leveraging our extensive experience in large-scale asset management, we aim to advance energy security while contributing to the transition toward lower-carbon systems.”
Etihad Water and Electricity’s involvement in these consortiums solidifies its position as a pivotal player in the drive toward sustainable development within the region. Serving over 2 million residents across the Northern Emirates, the organization operates an expansive power and water network that exceeds 23,000 kilometers. Through its strategic engagement in public-private partnerships (PPP), EtihadWE is not only fortifying its infrastructure capabilities but is also actively participating in shaping the future of energy in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
