In a pivotal meeting dedicated to addressing the myriad challenges posed by cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), esteemed members of the Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP) convened to reaffirm their commitment to a sustainable and impactful humanitarian model. The gathering was deftly presided over by Her Excellency Sawsan Jafar, the Chairman of the Board and Founding Member, and featured prominent figures including Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Vice President and Founding Member, alongside other esteemed board members and officials.

A Unified Commitment to Humanitarian Action

During the proceedings, Her Excellency Jafar articulated the board’s collective dedication to advancing the mission of FOCP, under the esteemed guidance of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of the Ruler of Sharjah and the Founder and Patron of FOCP. “Our strategic direction remains firmly rooted in social responsibility and generosity, ensuring a lasting and sustainable model of humanitarian action,” Jafar stated. “The board is committed to a holistic management approach that balances strategic planning with continuous evaluation, enhancing FOCP’s long-term impact.” This commitment underscores a landscape where compassion intersects with systemic changes to create a robust support structure for those affected by cancer.

Reinforcing a Holistic Approach to Patient Support

A significant theme of the meeting centered around the imperative for comprehensive patient support. His Excellency Dr. Abdalla Al Zarooni emphasized the necessity of expanding collaborative partnerships to enrich the medical, psychological, and social fabric surrounding cancer care. “We are developing impactful initiatives tailored to meet the diverse needs of cancer patients and ensure a safe, empowering environment that sustains hope and emotional resilience throughout their treatment journey,” he articulated. This acknowledgment of the multifaceted challenges faced by patients is critical in crafting solutions that go beyond mere medical treatment, addressing the holistic well-being of individuals.

Advancing Regional Health Strategies

In alignment with its mission, FOCP announced the significant appointment of Majed Mohamed to the Board of Directors of the Eastern Mediterranean Noncommunicable Disease Alliance (NCDA). Mohamed, who will serve in a dual capacity as an external public health specialist and a representative of FOCP, expressed his enthusiasm for his new role. “This position allows me to contribute to regional health strategies while amplifying FOCP’s mission on a broader platform, representing an organization that has long been at the forefront of cancer and NCD advocacy,” he stated. His appointment not only strengthens advocacy efforts in the region but also signifies the growing importance of integrated health policies that encompass comprehensive cancer care.

Strategic Collaborations and Global Outreach

In an effort to bolster early detection and enhance community awareness of cancer, FOCP forged a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Emirates Health Services (EHS) during the second quarter of 2025. This partnership is in alignment with national healthcare objectives, aiming to provide crucial financial and emotional support to cancer patients. Furthermore, FOCP’s presence on the international stage was marked by its participation in the 25th International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) World Conference on Health Promotion, hosted in the region for the first time in May 2025. Here, FOCP not only contributed to a vital panel discussion on equality and innovation in cancer care, but also organized patient-centric initiatives designed to empower survivors and their families.

Comprehensive Advocacy and Community Engagement

FOCP’s proactive approach is reflected in its recent initiatives, including the organization of eight patient support events this year in collaboration with twelve partners, directly benefiting 279 patients and survivors. The organization’s engagement extended to five significant local and international advocacy platforms, attracting 225 attendees and resulting in the production of seven strategic reports that highlight FOCP’s influence on health and community policy. Notably, FOCP participated in the UAE Oncology Society’s cancer survivor graduation ceremony held at the Museum of the Future, celebrating the incredible journeys of resilience among recovery patients.

In conclusion, the Friends of Cancer Patients continues to forge a path towards rigorous advocacy, holistic care, and innovative partnerships aimed at transforming the landscape of cancer treatment and support within the UAE and beyond. Through these efforts, FOCP stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment, committed to enhancing the lives of those facing the challenges of cancer.
