Schneider Electric Unveils The NEST: A Beacon of Sustainability in Dubai
In a significant stride toward environmental stewardship, Schneider Electric has announced the achievement of carbon neutrality for its newly inaugurated office, The NEST, located in Dubai. Remarkably, this milestone was accomplished a mere three months following the office’s official opening, underscoring the company’s steadfast commitment to transparency in carbon emission management and sustainability practices.
The NEST stands as a futuristic embodiment of what a modern workplace can achieve when technology and sustainability are intertwined. With a design that emphasizes resource efficiency, collaboration, and employee well-being, the structure is equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software solutions. These technologies enable it to adapt seamlessly to future needs while ensuring resilience in an era of rapid environmental change.
Amel Chadli, President of Schneider Electric’s Gulf Cluster, articulated the company’s ambitious goals: “By embedding our own technologies, we have cut energy consumption by 37 percent this year, while aiming to achieve an emissions reduction of over 700 tons of CO2 equivalent per year by 2026. This illustrates our belief that a net-zero future is more than a vision; it is an attainable reality. We take pride in creating a vibrant workspace that aligns directly with the UAE’s strategic initiative for Net Zero by 2050, serving as a model for a more sustainable future.”
The EcoStruxure Solutions Suite: A Technological Cornerstone
The NEST not only signifies Schneider’s commitment to sustainability but also marks the launch of the company’s Impact Buildings Program aimed at pushing the boundaries of sustainable practices across its global commercial real estate portfolio. Central to this endeavor is the EcoStruxure solutions suite, which encompasses advanced technologies such as Building Operation, Power Monitoring Expert, Building Data Platform, and Planon.
Visitors to The NEST can witness these smart building technologies firsthand, which seamlessly integrate to facilitate an ecosystem of sustainability. Chadli emphasized the collaborative spirit inherent in this project, stating, “The NEST is more than just a new building; it reflects the power of partnership. Our employees named this building, fostering a true sense of ownership from its inception. Collaborating with local partners like Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) and the Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority (DIEZ), we’ve turned our vision into reality.”
Sustainability at The NEST is founded upon four core principles: it is designed to be sustainable, people-centric, resilient, and efficient.
Significance of Automation in Resource Management
As buildings are responsible for nearly 37 percent of global carbon emissions, the design and operation of facilities like The NEST set a crucial precedent in the push for sustainability. Schneider Electric has embedded digital monitoring and automation capabilities into its infrastructure to significantly enhance electricity and water efficiency. This initiative is a testament to the company’s “Electricity 4.0” vision, where the interplay between electrification and digitalization gives rise to next-generation buildings that are smart, adaptable, and designed for the future.
“The NEST showcases how digitalization and electrification can magnify sustainability within the built environment,” said Walid Sheta, Zone President for the Middle East and Africa. He highlighted Schneider Electric’s proactive role in empowering partners and customers throughout the region to lead initiatives in energy efficiency, operational excellence, and climate action.
Strategically situated within Dubai Silicon Oasis’s Technology Hub, The NEST spans 10,000 square meters and accommodates over 1,000 employees. Its rigorous environmental standards have recently earned it the prestigious Platinum SmartScore certification from WiredScore, which assesses digital connectivity and smart technology. This accomplishment further solidifies its position as a leader in sustainable construction, aligning with both the UAE’s Net Zero Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33.
The NEST has achieved perfect scores across multiple assessed categories, including User Functionality, Technological Foundation, and Innovation. It is currently undergoing evaluations for the WELL and LEED ID+C Platinum certifications, which would serve to enhance its already robust sustainability credentials.
A Vision for the Future
The innovative infrastructure of The NEST empowers local talent and fosters an environment dedicated to the advancement of energy technology. As Sheta aptly stated, “This building reflects our belief that people are at the heart of sustainability. Together with the Innovation Hub and Training Center, it is crucial in shaping the future of smart infrastructure.”
In a region increasingly characterized by rapid urbanization and environmental challenges, The NEST serves as both a model and a catalyst for sustainable development in Dubai and beyond. As governments and corporations alike navigate the complexities of climate change, the actions taken at facilities such as The NEST may well pave the way for a greener future.
