Dubai’s Desalination Expansion: Pioneering Sustainable Water Solutions
In a commendable stride towards bolstering its water security, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has made significant progress on the pioneering desalination plant at the Hassyan Complex, with the first phase boasting a remarkable production capacity of 180 million gallons per day (MIGD). The project, which utilizes state-of-the-art seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) technology, epitomizes the commitment of Dubai’s leadership to develop an integrated and sustainable water infrastructure in light of the increasing demands prompted by rapid urbanization and climate change.
During a recent review, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, received an update on the project’s current status, which now reflects a completion rate of approximately 40.6%. This groundbreaking initiative forms part of a larger AED 3.377 billion (USD 918 million) investment, setting the stage to become the largest water production endeavor globally employing SWRO technology. Significantly, it marks DEWA’s inaugural implementation of the Independent Water Producer (IWP) model, which seeks to engage private sector expertise in the management and operation of major water projects, fostering efficiency and innovation.
The completion of this ambitious project is forecasted for 2027, and it promises to dramatically enhance Dubai’s capacity to provide high-quality desalinated water, thus supporting the emirate’s sustainable development strategy. Al Tayer underscored the alignment of this initiative with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, who advocates for an advanced, integrated infrastructure capable of meeting the evolving demands of both residents and industries.
“The 180 MIGD desalinated water project in Hassyan is integral to ensuring the sustainability of Dubai’s water resources. It represents a commitment to maintain a world-class infrastructure to support our city’s growth and is a fundamental part of our comprehensive sustainable development plans,” Al Tayer remarked. He emphasized that the project constitutes a strategic element in enhancing water security by harnessing sustainable resources, particularly in alignment with the Dubai Integrated Water Resource Management Strategy 2030, which emphasizes enhancing water resources through cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions.
The desalination initiative also aligns with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to provide 100% of the city’s energy from clean sources by the year 2050. Al Tayer highlighted the operational advantages of SWRO technology, noting that it requires significantly less energy compared to traditional multi-stage distillation plants, thereby establishing itself as a more sustainable option for water desalination. The strategic vision articulated by DEWA is that by 2030, all desalinated water will be produced through a mixed energy formula incorporating renewable energy and waste heat, thereby enhancing ecological integrity while meeting the increasing water demands of the city.
In attending the review of the project’s progress, Al Tayer was accompanied by Waleed Bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence, along with other senior officials and engineers from DEWA.
