Sharjah Book Authority Workshop Showcases the Fusion of Tradition and Innovation in Andalusian Art
In anticipation of wrapping a distinctive cultural thread around the upcoming Rabat International Book Fair (RIBF) in 2025, the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) recently hosted a dynamic art production workshop entitled “Al-Andalus: A Futuristic Visual Simulation.” This engaging three-day event, which took place at the SBA’s headquarters, marked a remarkable convergence of creative talents from both the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Morocco, showcasing the enduring influence of Andalusian civilization through contemporary artistic expressions.
The workshop is pivotal to Sharjah’s role as the Guest of Honour at RIBF 2025, set to unfold from April 17 to April 27. It invited six renowned painters, graphic designers, and visual artists to reimagine the vibrant cultural heritage of Andalusia—a region steeped in history marked by its rich tapestry of arts, science, and philosophy that flourished during the Muslim rule in medieval Spain. The artists brought together an impressive range of expertise and styles, blending traditional methods with cutting-edge digital techniques and innovative approaches. This combination allowed them to create works that not only resonate with the historical significance of Andalusia but also pose provocative inquiries into its future relevance.
The SBA’s headquarters served as an incubator for creative synergy as the artists immersed themselves in the duality of traditional and digital realms. Participants meticulously concentrated on interpreting their personal and collective histories, catalyzing a fruitful dialogue between the past and contemporary narratives. Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, the CEO of the SBA, shared insights into the project’s broader cultural implications.
