Telecom Italia’s Sparkle to Launch Groundbreaking GreenMed East Subsea Cable System
In an ambitious move to enhance connectivity between the Middle East and Europe, Telecom Italia’s wholesale arm, Sparkle, has announced the development of a new subsea cable system named GreenMed East. This innovative infrastructure is set to traverse the Adriatic Sea, facilitating direct connections between Middle Eastern nations and the Italian mainland. The project reflects an effort to establish a high-performance communication corridor across the Central-Eastern Mediterranean, simultaneously bolstering diversity, resilience, and low-latency connectivity for telecom carriers, cloud service providers, and content distributors.
The GreenMed East initiative is being constructed with the expertise of Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN), which is responsible for the design and production of the subsea optical infrastructure. Elettra Tlc, on the other hand, will manage marine operations, which include route surveys and the installation of the cable system. This collaborative effort was officially formalized during a signing ceremony held in Dubai earlier this week. The connected segments of this substantial endeavor are projected to begin operations by late 2028.
Positioned as the most direct conduit between the Middle East and Europe, GreenMed East aims to deliver an essential upgrade to existing digital infrastructure. It will not only bridge the Levant region with Italy but will also extend connectivity to strategic points in Crete and Sicily, further linking into Balkan countries. Sparkle’s extensive backbone network, already encompassing over 600,000 kilometers of fiber, will integrate this new system, thereby significantly enhancing the scale and efficiency of regional communications.
“GreenMed represents another concrete step in Sparkle’s strategy to strengthen the Mediterranean basin as a key digital gateway and to reinforce Italy’s role as a primary international connectivity hub,” remarked Enrico Maria Bagnasco, CEO of Sparkle. He articulated that the coupling of the GreenMed in the Adriatic with the pre-existing BlueMed cable system in the Tyrrhenian Sea offers “two highly innovative routes between Europe and the Middle East for maximum diversification and resilience.” This dual-route strategy highlights Sparkle’s commitment to addressing the increasing demand for robust global digital highways, particularly in an era characterized by rapid technological evolution and escalating data traffic.
