A Global Celebration of Visionary, Innovative, and Inspirational Design

TORONTO, ON (TSX, NYSE: STN) — Stantec, a renowned leader in sustainable design and engineering, is set to showcase its innovative contributions at the upcoming 2025 World Architecture Festival (WAF). The festival, distinguished for its celebration of architectural excellence, will feature a live-judging session that highlights the ingenuity behind some of Stantec’s most compelling projects. Stantec has previously garnered accolades at the WAF, including the Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Hospital, recognized at the 2024 gathering in Singapore, and both the FortWhyte Alive Buffalo Crossing Visitor Centre and The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, celebrated in 2023. Moreover, the University of Lethbridge’s Isttaniokaksini / Science Commons, crafted in collaboration with KPMB Architects, also received acclaim in 2022.

As the 2025 festival approaches, Stantec announces its shortlisted projects that exemplify cutting-edge design intervention across various categories.

Cambridge Memorial Hospital Redevelopment, Cambridge, Ontario – Completed Buildings, Health Category

The revitalization of the Cambridge Memorial Hospital seamlessly intertwines a modern extension with the original riverfront structures, culminating in a combined footprint of approximately 470,000 square feet. This ambitious undertaking not only increases capacity but does so while honoring the region’s architectural heritage. Local stone masonry reflective of traditional mill buildings has been utilized to reinforce a dialogue between the new construction and the historical context of the area. The design thus serves as an exemplar of how contemporary health facilities can integrate into established landscapes, all while enhancing patient experience through improved access and comfort.

Dubai Diabetes Centre, Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Future Projects, Health Category

Positioned in the heart of Dubai, the Dubai Diabetes Centre marks a significant expansion in healthcare capacity, doubling the existing facility’s size to encompass 60,000 square feet. With five tailored diabetes clinics and 60 examination rooms, the project aims to provide comprehensive multidisciplinary specialty services under one roof. Envisioned as a “walled garden,” the architectural scheme presents a low-profile structure characterized by a striking opaque façade that transitions into an open and luminous interior. This distinct design not only prioritizes patient privacy but also echoes the center’s holistic approach to diabetes care, which encompasses clinical treatment, patient education, and medical research. By offering a welcoming environment, the center seeks to embody comfort and serenity, reinforcing its commitment to holistic health management.

Red River College Polytechnic Interdisciplinary Health & Community Services Simulation Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba – Interiors, Education Category

The Red River College Polytechnic has made significant strides in pioneering simulation-based education through the recently completed Interdisciplinary Health & Community Services Simulation Centre. Designed to cater to nursing, allied health, and paramedicine students, the Centre emphasizes a hands-on learning approach that cultivates both skill and empathy. It strategically integrates spaces that facilitate immersive experiences, enabling students to navigate complex scenarios in a controlled setting. The centre features delineated simulation suites for nursing and paramedicine, creating a tangible boundary between realistic practice and educational scenarios. Distinctive teal and black colored portals mark transitions between these environments, guiding learners through a thoughtfully orchestrated pathway that mirrors the pressures and dynamics of real-world healthcare settings.

A Vision for the Future

Stantec’s participation in the WAF underscores a broader narrative about the intersection of architecture, healthcare, and community well-being. Each project’s design philosophy resonates with global trends prioritizing sustainability and human-centered approaches. Through thoughtful material choices and innovative structural designs, Stantec not only enhances functionality but also contributes positively to the cultural and social landscapes of the regions in which it operates.

The upcoming WAF offers an unparalleled platform for Stantec to further this dialogue on the significance of architectural innovation in shaping the environments where we live, work, and heal. With a commitment to sustainable practices woven into its DNA, Stantec continues to define a path where architecture and environmental stewardship converge to create spaces that truly enrich human life.
