Umm Suqeim Street Improvement Project Progresses Towards Completion

In a significant development for Dubai’s urban infrastructure, Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), recently announced that 70% of the Umm Suqeim Street Improvement Project has been successfully completed. This essential infrastructure project stretches from the intersection with Al Khail Road to the junction with Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, encompassing key transit routes vital for the city’s burgeoning population, which exceeds one million residents.

During a recent site visit aimed at assessing ongoing progress, Al Tayer reiterated the project’s alignment with the directives of Dubai’s leadership, which emphasize the need to bolster road infrastructure to accommodate the city’s rapid urban expansion. As part of a broader development plan for the Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra corridor, this initiative not only aims to improve traffic flow but also strives to enhance overall mobility across one of the UAE’s most dynamic cities.

The improvement project itself spans a substantial 16 kilometers, connecting Jumeirah Street to Emirates Road. Al Tayer provided insights into the completed phases that cover a distance of 4.6 kilometers, specifically from Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road. Noteworthy among the enhancements is the ongoing construction of the Umm Suqeim–Al Barsha South intersection near Kings’ School. This new intersection will feature an 800-meter tunnel, accommodating four lanes in each direction, supplemented by a signalized surface-level intersection.

Al Tayer emphasized the project’s strategic importance, stating, “The Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra Corridor Improvement Project represents one of RTA’s key transverse (east-west) traffic corridors. It is meticulously designed to enhance connectivity between four major arterial roads: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.” These improvements are expected to boost the corridor’s capacity to handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour, significantly reducing travel time between Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road by an astounding 61%, decreasing the duration from 9.7 minutes to merely 3.8 minutes. The corridor serves numerous critical residential and development areas, contributing positively to the urban landscape of Dubai.

Integration of Smart Technologies

In a testament to the RTA’s commitment to innovation, Al Tayer also highlighted the deployment of smart technologies to monitor and enhance the efficiency of road projects across the emirate. The RTA is leveraging drones to capture aerial images and collect analytical data regarding project progression. Furthermore, artificial intelligence is being utilized to meticulously track construction milestones and assess performance indicators. This integration of technology has facilitated a remarkable increase in operational efficiency, evidenced by a 100% boost in onsite presence and a 60% reduction in the time allocated for site surveys. Additionally, time-lapse imaging technology is aiding in the continuous monitoring of construction activities, resulting in a 40% enhancement in overall project oversight.

Previous Phases and Overall Impact

Reflecting on the historical context, RTA completed Phase I of the Umm Suqeim Street Improvement Project in 2013, which encompassed the section from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road. That phase consisted of the construction of two substantial bridges with three lanes each in both directions. These structures significantly improved traffic management along the eastern and western streets parallel to Al Asayel Street and First Al Khail Street, respectively. The project also integrated two signalized intersections at critical junctions and introduced three pedestrian bridges, thereby promoting safe passage between the Al Quoz and Al Barsha communities.

Further advancing the infrastructure landscape, in 2020, RTA opened a crucial main bridge along Umm Suqeim Street at the entrance to Dubai Hills Mall and Al Barsha South. This 500-meter bridge, with a similar capacity of 16,000 vehicles traveling per hour, stands as a testament to the RTA’s ongoing commitment to enhancing traffic safety and efficiency throughout Dubai.

As Dubai continues to evolve as a global metropolis, initiatives like the Umm Suqeim Street Improvement Project highlight the proactive approach taken to address urban challenges, ensuring that infrastructural investments align with the demands of an expanding population while integrating cutting-edge technologies for optimal efficiency.
