RTA Completes Largest Overhaul of Ventilation and Cooling Assets on Dubai Metro

Ventilation Overhaul Reaches New Milestone

CONSTRUCTION NEWS

In a significant advancement for urban transport infrastructure, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has announced the successful completion of the second phase of an extensive overhaul of the ventilation and air conditioning systems across the Dubai Metro’s Red and Green Lines. This initiative underscores RTA’s unwavering dedication to enhancing passenger experience and operational efficacy, particularly during the sweltering summer months characteristic of the region.

The revitalization project is part of RTA’s Strategic Plan for 2024 to 2030, a comprehensive framework designed to elevate passenger comfort, boost customer satisfaction, enhance operational efficiency, and ensure the long-term sustainability of essential assets. This ambitious vision aligns seamlessly with RTA’s overarching objective of establishing itself as a global leader in seamless, sustainable mobility solutions.

This recent achievement serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts between RTA and its operational partner, Keolis-MHI, in amplifying service quality and optimizing infrastructure readiness. More than a mere refurbishment, the project aims for longevity—extending the lifespan of critical systems, ensuring reliable performance, and prioritizing the comfort of metro users.

During this second phase, a total of 876 ventilation and air conditioning units were meticulously overhauled across 14 stations and two car parks along the Red Line, all conducted without disrupting train operations. This was confirmed in a statement by the RTA, highlighting the project’s efficiency and strategic planning.

Phase 2 follows the successful completion of its predecessor, Phase 1, which addressed 261 units across 13 stations. The synergy between passenger comfort and operational resilience forms the bedrock of RTA’s maintenance strategy. The successful delivery of this latest phase has significantly bolstered cooling performance and reliability throughout the metro network, serving as a clear affirmation of the commitment and coordination demonstrated by the diverse teams managing the maintenance efforts.

The extensive nature of the works undertaken during this phase included the replacement and refurbishment of essential components such as air handling units (AHUs), fan coil units (FCUs), chilled water pumps, extract fans, smoke extract fans, and pressurization units. This comprehensive scope also entailed the replacement of bearings and cooling coils, in addition to deep cleaning and dynamic balancing, which collectively serve to restore all equipment to its optimal design performance.

Efficient scheduling was paramount to the project’s success. Over the course of ten months, work was strategically executed outside peak operational hours and during night shifts, ensuring minimal disruption to station operations and a streamlined passenger experience throughout the entire execution period. This meticulous planning reflects RTA’s commitment to operational excellence and customer service.

Looking ahead, preparations are already in progress for Phase 3 of the initiative. This upcoming phase aims to target the remaining 25% of public-area FCUs, as well as the essential back-of-house and critical room AHUs across the Red Line stations. Preliminary experimental and verification works for this phase commenced in mid-July 2025, signaling continued progress in RTA’s overarching infrastructure enhancement endeavor.

In sum, the completion of this significant overhaul not only bolsters the resilience and reliability of the Dubai Metro’s cooling systems but also exemplifies RTA’s commitment to maintaining an efficient, customer-focused urban transport system. As the city anticipates rising temperatures, such strategic upgrades ensure that Dubai remains a leader in providing seamless and comfortable transit options for its residents and visitors alike.

As the metropolis continues to expand and develop its transportation infrastructure, projects like this represent an essential commitment to sustainability, technology, and passenger satisfaction that align with the broader goals of urban modernization in the region.
